27/10/2049

Hey,
My name's Amira and I'm 15. I like to belly dance (mum's Egyptian so she taught me herself), hang out with friends and swim in the lake near our house. I got you as a present from my older brother, who would rather have me quiet when we stay up at night than talk while he's playing computer games. Just so you know, we're on the surface. Not drugged-up sheep who are watched every minute of every day. Let me explain, as you're just a book:
In 2001, a meteor crashed into Salt Lake, (in former America, not here in what was Australia). Since everyone was scared out of their brains, they turned to the government for advice. But they liked having the people follow their every word, too much. So they planted bombs in random places around the world that looked like meteor explosions; and eventually said to the world (that hadn't been killed from the bombs) that everyone must go underground to cities that had been built for the Cold War. No one has left. They're all still down there; no privacy; no free expression without getting jailed; like the old novel 1984 except they're drugged regularly to stop any uprising. They don't know the truth.
But us? Well, around 2-4 million people from everywhere around the globe are up here, free. We have smaller towns, but no government, no money (just trading stuff like the old days, and we all help each other), but still there are obviously the common-sense social rules that aren't oppressive, only helpful. We are free.
